Memorial Hall

Originally built as Elvins Coach Works, it became a cinema from 1914 and was named the Cinema. Later converted into a swimming pool, by 1937 it was operating as a cinema again, known as the Swimming Pool Cinema with 385 seats. It was equipped with a British Talking Pictures (BTP) sound system. It was part of the Mayfair Circuit (Control) Ltd.

The Swimming Pool Cinema closed in 1955 and the building became the Memorial Hall, offering a programme of amateur stage productions. The proscenium was 24ft wide and there were three dressing rooms. Films returned from 1973 to 1975 and it then returned to live theatre use. Seating is now provided for 240 in the stalls and 126 in the balcony.

Cinema shows stopped after the war but returned from 1973 to 1976 when Colin Aldis used it for a time while his CBA Exchange was a bingo hall.

In the 1944 KYB, proprietors are given as Mayfair Circuit (Control) Ltd., with A. Cohen booking the films. Mayfair was an Associated British Cinemas subsidiary company.
