It is now reported online that the planning application has been withdrawn, no doubt due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The report reads “In a statement on Tuesday (March 31), Odeon confirmed that it had “temporarily” pulled its plans”, so hopefully the plans may be resubmitted when life returns to normal.
In another report online it states that Guildford Borogh Council bought the freehold to both the Odeon and Old Orleans restaurant sites in October 2018 and there is an interview with a councillor expressing the council’s desire to improve the sites, so I dare say they will be keen that the application is resubmitted at some point in the future.
ODEON have recently applied for planning permission to build two new screens in the former restaurant at the front of the building, which would increase the total number of screens at the site to 11. The plans are available on the Guildford council website. The cinema also appears to have plans to be refurbished, to become one of ODEON’s Luxe cinemas.
Standard, but good, modern multiplex. All 9 auditoria have Scope screens with movable side masking. The screen sizes are good. The smaller auditoria (6 to 9) are still a good size and have impressive screens.
Built to a sloping floor design before stadium seating became the norm.
Perhaps by today’s standards the foyer and corridors look a little spartan, but that’s a minor comment. In all, I found it a good cinema.
This is the only cinema in the UK to have sony 4K digital projection
The original Odeon Guildford, built in 1935, closed as a 4-screen cinema in 1996 when this new Odeon opened. It was demolished in late-2002.
Does anybody know what happened to the original Odeon in Guildford, which was located at the top of the town?
