The Rainbow Theatre was opened on May 16, 1937 with Bing Crosby in “Pennies from Heaven”. By 1950 it was operated by Long Theaters. It was still open in 1957. Since demolished, a Best Western Hotel now sits on the site.

The loss of Rainbow Theatre joins the many losses of the historic Freedman’s Town/Fourth Ward in Houston, Texas. I attended a couple movies at Rainbow Theatre as a child with my older sisters. It was a new experience and one that I will not forget. Best Western Hotel now stands at the 907 West Dallas Street location of Rainbow Theatre.
Cinema Treasures is truly needed and I am glad to have found it when researching a project. Thank you.
The Grand Opening of the Rainbow Theatre in Houston took place May 16, 1937 with “Pennies from Heaven” on the big screen but preceded by the marriage of Miss Lillie Mae Parker to Kenneth Arnold Gamble.
