Closed in 1982 at the height of the home video boom, it was re-opened as the Forum Cinema on 6th January 1987 with Robert de Nero in “The Mission”. It became the 38th Regional Film Theatre to be programmed by the British Film Institute.

Still owned and operated by the local council, the Forum Cinema continues today as an alternative to the two main multiplex cinemas in the town.
