Opened in 1975, the Reading Film Theatre was located in the University of Reading lecture theatre of Whiteknights. It was initially sponsored by the British Film Institute and was capable of screening 35mm and 16mm prints. It became the art house cinema of the town.
As with all places of entertainment, Reading Film Theatre was closed in March 2020 due to the national restrictions introduced to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly, although it did manage to reopen, continuing restrictions at the University, coupled with projection equipment ‘failures’, led to the Reading Film Theatre closing for good in Autumn 2021.
Happily, the town’s newly opened (July 2021) independent cinema, Reading Biscuit Factory (see separate Cinema Treasures entry), approached the management at Reading Film Theatre, and agreed to show films selected by the Film Theatre once a fortnight on Sundays at 4pm ands Wednesdays at 7pm. The first such screening was the French classic “Amelie” in April 2022. So the Reading Film Theatre continues!
