Harlequin Theatre & Cinema

The Harlequin Theatre opened as a live theatre in December 1986. It was designed by the architectural firm Building Design Projects, theatre consultant was J. Wyckham Associates. It is funded and operated by the local council. Seating was provided for 494.

Since 1985, a 100 seat cinema auditorium has been added and this was in regular use as a first run cinema. Films could also be screened in the main theatre.

In September 2023 the building was closed due to the discovery of rotting concrete known as Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) which was used in the construction of the building. It was decided in August 2023 that closure would be permenant until funds were available to carry out renovations and repairs.
