As far as I saw from the most recent Google street view, the Empire Theatre building no longer houses a gymnasium, but it does have local radio studios and a news bureau for Radio-Canada on the 3rd Avenue side of the building, along with a spa, a hair salon and offices at the back end of the building on the Balsam Street side.
The New Empire Theatre in Timmins was built around 1930, by Mr. Leo Mascioli owner of Timmins Theatres Limited. Mr. Mascioli was an extremely successful builder and theatre operator who in 1937 became a partner of Famous Players Canadian Corporation in the operation of many theatres in Timmins, and Sudbury, Canada!
The New Empire Theatre, is the twin of Empire Theatre, and was built after and is smaller, but both are closed and are on the same street. Empire Theatre is four floors, and I’m a tenant in the building (there’s four rents on the 2th and 3th floor), first floor are various shops (CBC, dentist, hair salon), and in the back of the building is the martial arts centre (the ceiling of the centre was added years later after the theatre was closed, but above it there’s this huge empty space in which you can see the original ceiling of the theatre that I’d estimate to be a good 50 feet high, the wood beams are still there with the decorations but the painting is falling away. You can see the theatre via the projection room at the 4th floor (which is closed to the public) I’m going to provide some pictures.
