The Cinema House was opened pre-1934 and had a seating capacity of 600 and a 20 feet wide proscenium. In the 1970’s it was re-named Phoenix Cinema.

By 2000, it had been twinned and re-named Highland Theatre, with the main original auditorium seating 277 and a second screen formed out of the foyer which seated 25. In 2008 the Highland Theatre had seating for 251 (screen one) and 52 (screen two).

The Highland Theatre was closed in July 2010. The local community & volunteers re-opened the cinema as the Phoenix Cinema on 3rd August 2012 with the Disney/Pixar film “Brave” with seating for 150 in a single auditorium. It had closed on 3rd June 2024.

We went to see Scooby Doo in about summer 2002 and remember well being ushered into a tiny screen and given an extra chair to add to the row. Must have have been way over the safety limit for numbers but we had a fabulous time. It was a lovely friendly cinema so glad its reopened.

Closed 3rd June 2024, another cinema blaming lower audiences post-pandemic and rising operating costs.
