A conversion of an 1883-built building. The Plaza Theatre was opened by 1911. It later became the State Theatre. On July 30, 1931 it was renamed Strand Theatre. The sale of the Strand Theater from Herman Wolf to Walter Cowell was announced in the Waterloo Daily Courier on August 31, 1948. Mr. Wolf had purchased the theater in 1947. The Strand Theatre was closed in the mid-to late-1960’s when it was operating at weekends only.

It looks there are some lawyers at this address, but I don’t know if they are in the theater building or a new building.

This is not demolished. The history needs a lot of work. This theater appears on the 1911 map. The 1900 map has it as a dry goods store, and the building was built sometime before 1883. The second floor was a lodge room, at least up until the theater operation started.
For some incredibly stupid reason, I did a terrible job covering this town, despite decent weather. I’ve added a Sanborn view, and a shot of downtown with the theater in the foreground. The building is in decent shape, aside from the typical ugly remodeled ground floor.
First known as Plaza Theatre, later the State Theatre, and finally the Strand Theater since July 30, 1931. The Strand Theatre last operated as a weekend-only theater before closure in the mid-to-late-1960s.
