This theater appeared in the 1988 film “Mississippi Burning.”
The Martin Theatre opened its doors on March 11, 1949 with Tyrone Power in “That Wonderful Urge” along with a short entitled “Soap Box Derby”.
Its not listed on C.T.yet.There are a few Quonset Hut Theatres listed in Ga.
Augusta. Iam going by Borders tonight to look at that regional book written about entertainment in Augusta and I will see if it is mentioned.Last time I went by there it was a church.
Which city? Maybe I can find it.
We had a Quonset Hut Theatre here on Laney-Walker Blvd, that played movies for the nearby Black neighborhood, not too far from the LENOX theatre, but have no idea what the theatre’s name was.
Thats interesting there are 87 Quonset Hut theatres listed on C.T.
The March 18, 1949, issue of Boxoffice reported that the Martin Theatre in Lafayette had opened recently. The 669-seat house was of the quonset type, and was designed by the Martin circuit’s in-house architect, Rufus E. Bland, in association with engineer John Mauk. Bland was designing theaters for Martin at least as early as 1948 and at least as late as 1973.
