The April 24, 1914 issue of American Contractor noted the letting of contracts for a new Elks lodge and theater in Mahanoy City. The three-story, 42x125 foot building had been designed by Reading, Pennsylvania architect Edward Z. Scholl. A couple of sources say that the lodge was dedicated in 1916, but I haven’t found an opening date for the theater.

The Elk Theater was owned by a Shamokin. Pa. based operator, Buckley Amusement Enterprises. This chain also operated the Capitol and Majestic theaters in Shamokin and the State Theater in Mt. Carmel. This is all I know of this theater. The Victoria in Mahanoy City was operated by Victoria Amusement Enterprises of Shamokin and was build by Chamberlain Amusements of Shamokin prior to 1920.
