The Liverpool Opera House was built in 1902 as part of the Town Hall. Around 1917 silent movies began being shown at the Liverpool Opera House. In 1930 talking pictures started playing here and the name was changed to the Astor Theatre.

The Astor was part of the F.G. Spencer circuit in the late 1940s.
