State Theater

The State Theater operated from 1926. It was equipped with a 3 manual theatre organ. In the basement was a duck-pin bowling alley and a pool hall (which became a Speakeasy during Prohibition). From 1936 it was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. They were still the operators in 1950. It was closed in 1976.

It reopened in 2019 screening movies. Plans were announced to convert it into a mixed use arts venue, which would include several screening rooms and an IMAX screen (in the former balcony?), plus recording studios and a Speakeasy Cabaret Club in the basement.

It’s funny how late this part of Main got built up. In 1913, this block had the buildings on the corner with the park, then three large Victorian homes, and then the Majestic.
