The August 11, 1931 issue of Motion Picture Times said that H. N. Jorgensen had closed his East Grand Theatre in Dallas for a complete remodeling and an expansion that would almost double its seating capacity. Architect for the $25,000 project was W. Scott Dunne. Reopening was expected to take place about October 1.
It was the East Grand Theater and it was East Grand Ave. because Grand Ave. was a very long street, and was over past Fair Park. That would have been the west end of Grand. I spent many hours in the old East Grand theater back in the 40’s. Also many many hours in the Major Theater after it opened. We would go to the Major on Saturdays because they had several live bands there Roy Rogers and Dale Evans even showed up once. Then we would go to the East Grand on Sunday afternoon, after church of course. Good childhood memories.
Great pix, Don. Thanks. Love your photostream, btw.
Motion Picture Times of July 7, 1928, says: “While Holger Jorgensen and Mrs. Jorgensen are motoring through Colorado, Walter Jorgensen is in charge of the East Grand, Dallas neighborhood house.”
From 2010 the East Grand’s building remnants, a decorative interior mosaic tile floor and the sidewalk entrance.
That ad nails it, Chuck – East Grand it is! Should’ve checked it first. Thanks.
I am wondering if the opening of the Major (aka Lido), at 2830 Samuell Blvd (just a couple of blocks east of this theater) around 1950 directly led to the closing of the East Grand the following year.
Also, a poster on another nostalgia site dedicated to Dallas corrected me the other day when I referred to this theater as the EAST Grand – he said there was no “EAST” to it, it was just the GRAND; anybody know any of this for sure?
Status should be changed to Closed/Demolished. Where this small walk-in once stood is clearly visible, as the concrete floor and surrounding walls remain, but the space is open to the air and used as a parking lot for a bridal shop immediately adjacent to the NW.
An old movie theater ad from 1949 for the East Grand Theater.
