Chandos Cinema

Opened on 29th January 1934, the Chandos Cinema was designed by Satchwell & Roberts (also Palace Huddersfield and others) and had a small variety stage. Seating was on two levels, the small balcony was above the tiny foyer.

The Chandos Cinema lasted well into the 1980’s and stage use became more frequent. However, from 1968, it began operating two days a week as a bingo club, eventually closing for fim use and becoming a full time bingo club. This use ended on 4th January 1987 and the building became a garage for a Vauxhall dealership.

In February 2009 it is boarded up and for sale, given the amount of land (there is a car park) available, redevelopment seems a likely option. It was demolished in February 2014.

Unfortunately the cinema was demolished in February 2014 to make way for another supermarket.
