Strand Theatre

The Dunlap Theatre was opened by 1906. It suffered damage from a fire in July 1936. Repairs were carried out and it reopened as the Strand Theatre in early-1937. It was still operating in 1985.

The Strand might have been the successor of the Dunlap Theatre, which was listed in Julius Cahn’s guides for 1906-1907 and 1913-1914. The September 12, 1936, issue of The Film Daily reported that the Dunlap Theatre in Clarksville was being rebuilt and refurnished after having been damaged by a fire about two months previously. The Cahn guides listed the Dunlap as a ground-floor house of 750 seats, so it was about the same size as the Strand. I haven’t found any mentions of the Dunlap Theatre dating from later than 1936.

Map marker is off by two blocks. I think this is where the Water Department building is now.

The December 11, 1936 issue of Film Daily had this item:

“Malco Makes Changes

“Little Rock, Ark.— M. S. McCord, secretary-treasurer of the Malco Theaters, Inc., North Little Rock, has announced that the Dunlap Theater at Clarksville is undergoing extensive remodeling and when completed the name will be changed to the Strand Theater.”

As noted in my earlier comment, the Dunlap Theater was listed in Cahn guides at least as early as 1906.
