The Gem Theatre originally opened as a storefront nickelodeon by 1911. By 1921 it had been renamed Palace Theatre and was still showing movies in 1933. The closed building was heavily altered over the years and was demolished by 2021.

A list of movie theaters opened in Madison between 1911 and 1914 includes the Gem.
Status should be closed/demolished. This theatre building and adjoining structures have been razed and a new development built on the property.
The Gem is listed at 1947 Winnebago Street in the 1919 city directory, but the next edition available online, 1921, list that as the address of the Palace Theatre. The Palace is listed in the FDY through the 1933 edition, then vanishes. When the seating capacity is given it is 300.
