Opened 12th December 1932, although it wasn’t a purpose-built cinema, having originally been a cotton room and warehouse of Calvert’s India Mill. All seating was on a single floor.

When the Empire Cinema in the town centre closed in 1964, the CinemaScope screen was transferred to the Plaza Cinema, making it the first outside the town centre to have such a facility.

When the Plaza Cinema closed in the early-1970’s, it became a petrol station and a mill.
