Built for and operated by the local Croydon council, the Fairfield Halls consist of a 1,552 seat Concert Hall, a 763 seat Ashcroft Theatre and the Arnhem Gallery. Designed by Robert Atkinson & Partners, the Fairfield Halls were opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on 2nd November 1962.
Both the Concert Hall and Ashcroft Theatre were equipped to screen films. Although never used as full time cinemas, many recent hits and specialised films have been shown in the building over the years. There is a series of paintings of former old Croydon cinemas by local artist Norman H. Partridge, which were purchased by the council, and now hang in the entrance corridor of the Ashcroft Theatre balcony.
