Opened as the Embry Theatre, a live theatre catering for African-Americans. In 1933 it was renamed Avenue Theatre was only open for about five years to 1938. It was still listed as (Closed) in the 1943 edition of Film Daily Yearbook.
As of 2009 the building remains standing, has been used as a funeral home for several years and has retained its distinct theatre shape and design.
