I moved to Merryville in summer of 1954 into the house across the street from the theater. I started my sophomore year while there. Loved that little town. Many good memories in the short time I lived there Especially the theater. Saw Gone With the Wind for the first time.
I was raised in this small town and went to the sabine theatre almost everyday. I has been torn down and not renovated as previously stated. I hated to see it go. I met my husband of 44 years in that theatre. The picture that pops up on this site is not the place where the theatre stood. I don’t know why that pic is there it is in Merryville. I loved that old theater……
Outstanding! I love this place! As many times as I’ve passed through Merryville, I never took a picture of the old Sabine, but Lost Memory has uncovered an excellent photo! That is the Sabine Theater and hopefully it will be restored. Great info from Boxoffice from Joe, too.
If you go to Google Earth and take a view from Main street looking west on Hennigan street (I appoligize for misnaming the street as Herrigan) you can see the side of the old theater about a block west of the intersection of Main and Hennigan.
It’s a tiny town. I doubt it ever had two theaters. The building in the photo must be the Sabine.
Google Maps shows a Hennigan Street in Merryville. It crosses Main Street. The theater is probably at the corner. There are no street views for Merryville.
The Sabine is mentioned rarely in Boxoffice. The July 4, 1953, issue mentions it in passing, and the February 16, 1959, issue names it among theaters recently closed. The February 22, 1960, issue lists it among theaters recently reopened.
The January 6, 1964, issue said “R.E. Almand reopened the Sabine Theatre in Merryville, which had been dark a couple of months.” That’s the last mention of it I’ve found.
