Cinema

A small local cinema located in the town centre of Llanidloes. Several people have confirmed the existence of this hall to me but none have been able to put a name to it other than the title ‘Cinema’. The Cinema also had a cafe attached.

The Cinema was operating in 1937, and was still open in 1966. It is believed to have closed soon after.

Today, the front part of the building is in retail use as Laura’s Wedding Dresses, and the auditorium is the Barcode pub and nightclub.

Opened circa 1932 by Messrs R. Jervisor & E. Jones, the venue could seat only 275 patrons and had a Morisson sound system. It was built with the Cafe attached. By 1951 the Morrison system had been replaced by a Gyratone system. Admission was 6d to 2/–. By 1966 the venue had gone over to Bingo two night per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays with one show per night on the other days at 8/00pm and two shows on saturdays at 5.30pm and 8.00pm. Cinemascope was now fitted and prices ranged from 1/6d to 2/6d.

According to the Cinema Directory for 1958 Cinema was the actual name of this venue. I remember viewing it externally and the projection room was erected outside the building high up on two girders embedded into the back wall.

I think it was constructed with metal sheetings, and the steps up to the box were outside,I don’t think you could enter from inside the cinema. The last time I saw the building the projection room was gone, but you could see where the port holes had been cemented over.

I imagine it did not have a balcony as the cafe was underneath. The sound system was Gyrotone.

As I mentioned previously I viewed this cinema externally before and after closure, but could not recall on which street it was situated.
I’ve been on Google Street and found it on Great Oak Street, more or less opposite The National Milk Bar.

There are two establishments underneath a butcher’s shop & the Spice Club Indian Restaurant, one would never guess it was once a cinema but try looking around the corner of the building to see where the projection box was situated of which I mentioned on my previou post.
