Boxoffice, June 18, 1955: “WENATCHEE, WASH. - A late-July opening has been scheduled for the 600-car Pow Wow Drive-In that Peter Barnes is building north of here. The 90x45-foot screen and other equipment will be installed by Modern Theatre Equipment Co. of Seattle.”
Boxoffice, Aug. 13, 1955: “OROVILLE, WASH. – The new Powwow Drive-In was opened here recently by Peter Barnes”
I took those pics and the one above in 2010. I hope there are others out there who have pics from earlier years. When it was working, the sign had arrows that would “fly” and point to the drive in. Although it may be considered offensive now, if I had the money I would buy this sign and restore it. In the pic above, some one at some point has done a crappy restoration job on it. There is just no matching the original red and other paints (now illegal due to HUGE lead content). The letters were there still there in 2007, but by 2010 all had been stolen.
What remains of the drive-in marquee can be seen on Google at “Boundary Point Road & U.S. 97”. Here are two photos of the marquee: http://www.flickr.com/photos/martymo/4393347100/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/martymo/4393344136/
Approx address for this drive-in was 5 Boundary Point Road. the drive in itself was north of this address on a side street. Some of the ramps, though barely visible, are still there.
