The Surbiton Assembly Rooms are located on the corner of Maple Road, Claremont Gardens and Surbiton Hill. Built in the 1890’s, they were screening films by 1910. It continued in cinema use until sometime during World War I, when it was closed.

It then reverted back to public hall use, which continued until 1990. The council then sold the Assembly Rooms to Surbiton High School.

I worked for an AV company around the corner from this place. One evening in 1975, we installed a mobile 16mm rig in order to project an evening of travel films for a local holiday agent. I had no idea it had once been used as a ‘proper’ cinema!
