The Star Theatre resided on the second and third floor of the historic Leonard Block(built in 1870) in downtown Taunton, beside Town Hall. The theatre opened in 1911, but apparently did not survive the transition to the ‘talkie’ era, closing in 1929.
Several attempts have been made to renovate the block, but all have come short. With the building decaying, and repeated threats from the city to take the building via eminent domain, the theatres prospects look dim. It was demolished in December 2014.

I have read about the Star Theatre in Taunton a couple of times in newspapers 15 to 20 years ago. There were efforts back then to do something with it. My memory is that at one time there were fairly firm plans to restore it, but they obviously have come to nothing.
On the local Boston TV news today was a story about a fire in the attic of Taunton City Hall. To the right of City Hall is a large, old, red-brick building. I assume that this is the building which contains the Star Theater ??
A follow-up news story about the Taunton City Hall fire says that the Star Th. is indeed located in the old red-brick building on the right side of City Hall. City Hall is also over 100 years old.
have few pics of interior of this theater from few years ago from the mayor of Taunton Charlie Crowley will try to upload when feature is available. its shame city does not do more to keep this treasure. The Strand and Park Theaters were razed for a now defunct drugstore BOTH wre great old theaters that could have been restored
The Star is listed in the 1927 Film Daily Yearbook as having 600 seats and open daily.
The Star will be demolished soon. The building is considered unsafe and derelict. This news is from a Taunton newspaper and was referenced in a current THSA on-line newsletter.
Unfortunately demolition has commenced on the building. :–( http://www.wickedlocal.com/article/20141215/NEWS/141217861/0/SEARCH
The Leonard Block is now an empty lot.
