The Picturehouse was opened in late-1990 by Cathay Organisation. It was built next to the Cathay Building on the unused parking site. When it was first opened, the Picturehouse showed mainly arthouse films from around the world. Later on, The Picturehouse diversified into showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters aside from arthouse films.
Together with the Cathay Building, the Picturehouse was demolished to make way for the new Cathay entertainment and shopping center.
