The venue opened on the 1st January 1974 on the Bangor University campus. Apart from being a theatre built to modern standards, it contained a cinema with some 340 seats partly sponsored by the British Film Institute. In 1980 it was showing at least one week of films per month, sometimes more, including late night films shows. Its standard fare was Classic films, British and Foreign films, and favourite titles in both 35mm and 16mm formats.
It closed in 2008 through funding problems. The last shows were all of films voted for by its patrons. There were hopes it would be re-opened in the future, but it looked unlikely at the time when plans were proposed to re-open as a theatre only.
It was demolished in 2010, and the Pontio Arts & Innovation Centre was built on the site, which includes a theatre & cinema. Construction on that was over-running and it was not completed until early-2016.

Theatr Gwynedd is now sadly demolished, but building has now already started on a new university complex which will incorporate a new theatre & probably with cinema facilities.
I’ve uploaded a photo I took shortly before closure. (Just click on photos) work on the new complex seems to have come to a halt, no idea why.
