Located in the rejuvinated Darling Harbour district, close to Sydney city centre. The IMAX Theatre was opened 25th September 1996 with “The Living Sea”.
Boasting ‘the largest IMAX screen in the world’, the cinema played regular first run feature films as well as IMAX documentaries, and was equipped with 3D Digital. It was closed on 25th September 2016, the 20th anniversary of its opening. The closing films were “Intersteller” playing at 6pm, and “The Dark Knight” playing at 9pm. Both were presented on 70mm film.
Demolition began in December 2016 with plans to re-open a new cinema on the site in 2019.
