Astor Cinema

Opened in 1934, the Astor Cinema was one of the last surviving first-run cinemas in central Berlin from the 1930’s, until it closed at the end of 2002 and was afterward converted to retail use.

It was designed by Rudolph Moehring and originally operated by the Flebbe chain.

The Astor is now used for retail use as a clothing shop. Very little of the internal decorative features remain.

Originally a former restaurant, it first opened as a small arts theatre known as the Kleinkunst-Theater. Cinema use as the Astor Filmtheater was from 1934 when it had a seating capacity of 494, located on orchestra and balcony (which had side slips). The reduced seating capacity came in 1993 with the installation of new seats.
