According to the Tallahassee Democrat, yes, they were two separate theaters in Quincy and both were operated by the Interstate Enterprises chain just before the birth of the Leaf Theatre. But it was unclear where in Quincy the Shaw was because I cannot find its address. All 3 theaters continued to run films throughout the 1950s.

The Roxy and the Leaf Theaters were notable for the June/July 1964 prickets by six negro men.

Throughout the city of Quincy, there were five theaters in total. The Empire, the Roxy, the Enterprise (later Shaw), the Leaf, and the Hill Drive-In.

I have uploaded a 1980 photo of the Roxy by John Margolies found in the Library of Congress files.

According to one source the theatre was created in 1931 in a former tobacco warehouse and was originally called the Enterprise. However that same source said it then became the Shaw and only the Roxy in 1949 while other information on CT says that the Shaw and Roxy were two separate theatres operating concurrently.

An item in The Gadsen County Times from the week of April 12, 1934 mentions the Shaw Theater.

I have a newspaper story with pictures about the Roxy. It even has a picture of the floor of the projection booth and you can see the pedestal base and film on the floor. My scanner has failed me, but if you want a copy of the article with pictures email me at and I will mail you a copy.
