The National Theater had its first showing in Mexia, Texas in December of 1923. P. W. Box, the manager, by special arrangement, opened the theatre before its opening date so children could watch a Christmas show. P.W. Box and his brother, Dr. W.F. Box, built the National Theater in 1923 with a grand opening in 1924.
The original National Theatre appears to have closed in late 1950 or early 1951, and the name was moved to the former Palace Theatre, which had been remodeled. This was reported in the January 6, 1951 issue of Boxoffice. Maurice Easterling then owned both houses, as well as the Mexia Theatre, opened in late 1949.
An item in the April 13, 1929 issue of Motion Picture News said that “Dent Theatres, Inc., will start work on their new theatre, at Mexia, Tex., soon.” This could have been the National. It was not the Palace, as another item in the same issue of the magazine said that the Palace was then being remodeled.
