Lecture Hall Cinema

The Camp Cinema was located on the Royal Airforce Depot, close to the town centre. It opened in 1919. Although on military property, it was opened up to the general public. All seating was on a single level.

Known later as the Lecture Hall Theatre, it was closed to the at the outbreak of World War II in 1939, and became a military only cinema.

After the war, it was in use as a gymnasium and theatre for the R.A.F. Station personnel only.

By 2014 the camp had been closed and was earmarked for redevelopment for housing. Plans were to retain the Lecture Hall Cinema to be used as a museum & community hall. When seen in December 2023 construction of the residential buildings was continuing and the site, including the Lecture Hall Cinema were surrounded by hoardings.

The interior photo taken in December 2014 shows the former cinema awaiting conversion to a museum, with tiling stored on pallets for a fresh roof. All around builders are clearing and developing the site for housing.
