The December 1, 1930, issue of the Cortland Standard had an ad saying that the grand opening of Schine’s State Theatre would take place on December 4.
it’s a shame the state theater was torn down…obviously, people weren’t thinking clearly…..now it’s gone and it ain’t coming back…..cortland’s stuck with small/mall type theaters…ithaca saved theirs..cortland could have with the right combination of vision and ambition…..but it was lacking….
I saw many movies at this theater . Flubber, Unsinkable Molly Brown , Willard …… Big mistake to demolish this building , in my opinion.
that whole block on main st. was destroyed when they tore down the old state theater….now there’s nothing there but an ugly parking lot….cortland went down hill fast in the 60’s & 70’s……too bad, it was a pretty nice place at one time……
remember the distinct smell of that theater….particularly downstairs…..
That was a great theater….it was a big mistake to let it go…..cortland is the worse for it…..what were they thinking??
Tinseltoes, yes it is one and the same. I saw many a film there as a kid in the 50s and 60s. A great wide screen experience. The Beatles in A Hard Days Night on a large screen. Incredible!
A great and beautiful theatre. I saw King of Kings, The Longest Day, A hard Day’s Night and so many Saturday matinees. It was sad to see it torn down.
Wow Tinseltoes….That would have been a nice theater. What a shame. I drove through Cortland a few weeks back and it has certainly seen its better days.
1940-1964 ran by Schine Theaters?
1969 ran by Cortland Cinema Corp.?
