Iris Drive-In

The Iris Drive-In was another screen owned by Martin Theatres out of Columbus, Georgia. This small town drive-in parked 350 cars and had opened in 1951. It was actually one of three drive-ins in Griffin, Georgia. It was closed in 1978.

Newspaper ads I’ve found call it the “Iris Drive-In,” at least in 1972.

Exhibitor, Nov. 1, 1950: “Martin Theatres, Columbus, Ga., started work on the new Iris Drive-In, Griffin, Ga.”

Motion Picture Herald, Dec. 29, 1951: “Martin Theatres has announced the following changes: … Gordon Rich is the new manager of the Iris drive-in, Griffin, Ga.”

Boxoffice, June 21, 1952: “Billy Bevil, who doubles in brass as manager of the Gem in the winter and the Iris Drive-In during the summer, at Griffin, Ga., is currently using the marquee of the theatre to advertise attractions at the Iris.”

The last mention I could find in the Atlanta Constitution was in an ad on Aug. 16, 1978.

Actually, Griffin had three drive-ins, not two.

The advertisement lists the Iris Drive-In as being on Memorial Drive.

The only drive-in on Memorial Drive, which runs for just a few miles, is the Spaulding Drive-In.

Either the two drive-ins are the same OR the Spaulding Drive-In was located somewhere else. And wherever that was, I cannot find another drive-in around Griffin, GA in the 1962 aerial. That doesn’t mean another drive-in did not exist, but if it did I have yet to find it.
