There was something carved out of the forest west of town on US-129 / GA-11 in a 1967 aerial photo, on the south side of the highway at about today’s 280 State Hwy 11. The only signs that it had been a drive-in were two driveways and a lot of unusually pale ground.
Boxoffice, April 25, 1960: “C. H. Fountain is reopening his Fountain Drive-In at Lakeland April 29 for the season … Fountain is putting his drive-in, including 17 acres located on U. S. 129, on the market for $6,000.”
For being 17 acres and holding up to 200 cars, that’s a substantial piece of property. I do not believe the small rectangular cutout is large enough to hold 50 cars, much less 200.
A possible location is further west on HWY 129 just past Boyette Road where in 1967 it was an auto salvage yard. It was abandoned by 1971 and today is a residential area. It has the size and general shape to qualify. Plus, drive-ins becoming auto salvage yards is common enough, especially well outside of town.
Kenmore has it right. Historic Aerials 1956 aerial view shows a drive in at 569 US-129 west of town on the south side of the road.
