News About This Theater
Located in the Kerns district to the east of the city. This is a cool old theater with a beautiful neon sign. The Laurelhust Theater opened in 1923 with 650-seats. It has been split into a 4-screen theatre. It became a theatre pub around 2000. They play only good second run films and offer typical concessions plus gourmet pizza and beer!

Listed in various editions of Film Daily Yearbook with a seating capacity of 650 or 660 when it was a single screen theatre.
I saw and photographed this neon treasure for the first time less than two weeks ago. Truly a must for neon buffs. With regards to the above comment that the theatre opened in 1923, that’s not a surprise. The exterior sidewalls of the auditorium clearly look much older than the facade. Ornamental brickwork and tile clearly make a 1920s date of original construction very likely.
This is great Theater! It has a friendly staff, comfortable seating, decent food, and plenty of beer if you so desire. Wait a month or two and you can see the same movie Regal will charge nine dollars to attend for three dollars here only with much better atmosphere! They also acquire old movies year-round and run them for a week at a time. They are usually themed around some event or a time of the year. For example I have gone and seen: Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Ghostbusters, and The Goonies here.
A classic neighborhood theatre. It was remodeled in 1953. The entrance used to be around the block on the east side of the building. When they reopened with the new facade there was quite a celebration. That the entrance was moved around the block is the reason the lobby is so long.
The Laurelhust had the first wide screen in Portland. It was likely part of the 1953 remodeling.
A great theatre. In the 1950s it was managed by gentlemen who always wore tuxedo jackets. They also had Wednesday “vacation movies” for which you could buy a ticket at Kerns School to be punched each week.

Laurelhurst will be all digital by the end of December 2011. Apparently they’ll be keeping one 35mm projector for some of their repertoire screenings – but not all of the repertoire screenings. One hopes they’ll reveal which will be 35mm to draw film aficionados as, for the last few years, Laurelhurst has been offering excellent 35mm presentation; properly framed and with consistently sharp focus.
