From Ascension Island Heritage Society Website

Bowling Alley

“The Navy built this building, now the Geogetown Hall, at the turn of the century. The Naval maps of 1900 show it as the Recreation Rooms, although somehow it acquired the name of Bowling Alley. When the Navy withdrew, it was used as a hall and a cinema, with the ends of the building being used as a club, and as offices. Films were shown regulary untill 1987, when the higher cost forced a conversion to video projection. With the rise of TV and home video, the service ceased in 1990.”

Bob;
St. Helena, Ascension & Tristan de Cunha is the offical name of the ‘Country’ which these three islands form. They are a British Overseas Territory dependancy. Its a shame Google maps don’t recognise this.

Thanks for the link and history to the Ascension Island Heritage Society. The building is now used for community events. I found it by searching the internet!

Ken; I don’t think it’s a problem with Google Maps. I think it’s a problem with a great distance. I THINK Ascension is about 1,000 miles from Saint Helena, and Saint Helena is about 1,500 miles from Tristan da Cunha. It’s just a great big area. Sorta like asking Google to show the United States and all it’s Commonwealths and territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, American Saoma, Midway Island etc.). Google just can’t do it.

The present listing is of no help to anyone on the Google Map. In order for folks on CT to be able to see the island, I still say the island should be listed by itself.

You know all these island are making me wish I was young again and could join the Navy all over again!
