Augusta, Georgia had a Bijou Theatre that operated sadly only during the silent movie days. Augusta it turns out had quite a few silent movie theatres to serve a city population close to 50,000 people. Some burned to the ground others just went dark. The Wells' Bijou Theatre was located above a restaurant.

This theatre has almost the same address as the Elite, wonder if it was the same theatre or next door?
Yeah, I noticed that too,The IMPERIAL and RIALTO were almost side by side on Broad Street in Augusta. In fact, They were closer than the ELITE and BIJOU were.Thanks.
Bijou means a jewel.
Anyone have more info or photos from a long time ago?
Just recently spent time in the Archieves of the Augusta Chroncile as far back as 1915 I could find no theatre ads at all.I know we had theatres, maybe they didn’t place ads or just put them in for special films?
no info yet,Probably have all there is on this theatre.
Mike, I ran into the same problem here in Tampa. I was shocked to find no movie ads were published in the Tampa Tribune at all until just prior to 1920 as I recall. That would make it next to impossible to research local theatres that ran silent films. Who knows how many of these silent theatres we really had?
Yep, it was into the 20’s here with ads.I think I nailed all of our theatres here.Thanks.
Bijou was owned by Wells who also owned the Grand Opera and the Wells (later Imperial. The Bijou was located on 2nd floor in what was the Miller Walker Hall.
Correction: the Bijou was at 214 over a restaurant. Source Augusta Herald ads from 1905 - 09 and Sanborn Fire Insurance Map
