West Theatre

The West Theatre was opened in 1941. It had a facade covered in terra cotta tiles and a triangular marquee, with the theatre name mounted on top. It was still open in 1963. By 1974 it was Levin’s department store. In 2021 it sits vacant and boarded up.

This theatre is in rough shape, but it’s not demolished, I just photographed it yesterday.

Some quick research, looks like it was playing second-second-run B-movies by 1963. By 1974, it was a Levin’s department store. In 1975, the West Theatre company owed over $1000 in delinquent taxes.

The theater building is still there as I saw it in September, 2023 on a trip to Charleston. The theater was owned by the Aaron family who also owned the Sunset Theater which preceeded the West and was just a few doors up the street from the West. When the West opened, the Sunset was closed as the West was the replacement for the Sunset. The West Theater also had a bowling alley underneath it.
