Located on the corner of Claremont Road and Upper Lloyd Street, in the Greenhays district of Moss Side, an inner city suburb to the south of Manchester. The Claremont Super Cinema was opened on 1st February 1923. It was an imposing building with a corner entrance. It was taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain on 29th January 1929.
ABC closed the Claremont Super Cinema on 8th February 1958 with Peter Finch in “Robbery Under Arms”. It stood empty and unused for many years, eventually being demolished in 1974. Housing has been built on the site.

I was only 10 when they knocked this place down, grew up just down Claremont, corner of Yew Tree Road. My Dad ,Jimmy Murphy ran the News Agents on our block. Anyways these old cinema should of been “A Listed Building” Just like The Grosvenor Picture Palace, on Oxford Road, it was all tiled green and white,i used to play snooker there.I lOVE MANCHESTER, sorry for going on.. :)
