Wrong pic, it is not the Palace, it is the Taylor, the Palace was located on North Main St and has been demolished.
Thomas J. Cody and Robert Sloan launched the Palace Theatre in 1926 in downtown Big Lake likely on a ten-year lease. It was equipped for talkies. In 1935 under new operators, the location became the Texas Theatre. H. Ford Taylor took on the location in 1943. He revamped it relaunching as the Ford Theatre in March of 1945. Ford would build the Taylor Theatre in 1948 operating both locations. The Ford Theatre would close in 1950 and became a dance hall and dance instruction location.
The Palace theater has had much work done on it in 2018! As evident in the photo above, some government entity had spray painted “run down” buildings throughout Big Lake a bland beige/orange. There was a new $10,000 stage built and the front has had the windows cleared off of the paint and the walls painted light blue and white. It still does not look open but there are items in the window on display from Crystal Pistol’s 2nd Connection. It is an historic building but has not applied for a “medalion” because the owner said it may still be sold for demolition due to land values in Big Lake since the fracking boom.

The building was piled with junk inside, and since there are no windows up top, lots of birds may call this old theater home.
