The Starlite Drive-In was opened on July 20, 1950 with Joel McCrea in “Ramrod”. It was renamed Airport Drive-In at the beginning of the 1956 season. It was one of the many Upper Ohio Valley drive-ins along the Ohio River. Located right on the Brooke-Ohio County line, the Airport Drive-In received its name from the nearby Wheeling-Ohio County Airport.
The theatre was located along West Virginia 7 between Short Creek and Stone Shannon Roads. It was closed in November 1983. The lot has been leveled and paved and is now home to some sort of light industrial business. It’s hard to tell from Google Street View, but it appears that a heavily damaged screen is still standing with its back facing Short Creek Road.

Looks like Hwy 7 is in Ohio, across the river. Do you mean Hwy 2 instead? If you put the following address into the address bar, it’ll pop right onto the location.
630 Short Creek Rd., Short Creek, WV 26003 United States
You’re right. I don’t know what I was thinking. I couldn’t find an address on WV 2, but if that one works, might as well have that one listed.
There was a STarlite Drive-in in Short Creek.
Here are my pictures from April 2011.
cool pics andy!
Google Street View from October of 2016 shows the screen, what’s left of it, quite visible. It’s pretty much a skeleton but does have a few white panels left.
This was first known as the Starlite Drive-In, opening on July 20, 1950 with Joel McCrae in “Ramrod” along with a cartoon and a couple short subjects.
A closer address is 6552 River Rd, Wheeling, WV.
Google Maps has updated their addresses. This puts it right on the property.
A 1954 aerial shows the drive-in present and almost completely surrounded by a fence. By 1966, the screen was rebuilt as a widescreen and all of the fence had been removed. Difficult to say if the drive-in was still operational at that time.
The drive-in remained intact in 1982, but was demolished save for the screen by 1994.
The screen was still present in a July 2018 Google Street View, but by October 2021 it was gone.
