Majestic Cinema Rochester

Above an advert by Firth & Son carpet manufacturers. During the 1930’srecession and high unemployment the mushrooming cinema building became an important point of sale. Mollo also designed fitted carpets for various cinema interiors. During the early 1970’s he gave me an incomplete list of some of his carpet designs which were named by him. Over many years I have discovered additional cinemas where the same carpet was used from an earlier designs. In 1936 Mollo designed an in house carpet at Alf Shipman’s request for all their new built Shipman & King cinemas and was named the ‘Balka’ manufactured by Wilton Carpets Ltd., this carpet was configured in two designs: a general design for foyers and restaurants, boarder design for aisles and stairs being 48” in width. The carpet made in widths of 27” was used for the larger areas being hand sewn on site to fit.
