The price of tickets were 15 cents for kids and 35 cents for adults except for Wednesday and Thursday. Those two days were specially priced, one adult ticket at the 35 cents allowed the next person to get in for 1 cent. There were other special days also, Like the Pepsi Cola bottle top day. TO get in to see the local celebrity Bungles the clown and his guest The (original) Three Stooges live.
The Dixie Theatre actually opened on Dec. 23, 1917 – just posted a photo of the opening ad.
Joe Vogel, I have some friends from that area and they say the Jefferson was the theatre of choice. It was just down the way on 25th right at Jefferson Ave.
Joe Vogel, I have posted a photo of the map on the photo page. It looks like the Dixie was directly on the corner of 22nd and Jefferson
It looks like there has been redevelopment north of Hampton Avenue, the old grid of streets being replaced by a housing project. The Dixie, being odd-numbered, must have been on the west side of Jefferson between Hampton and 22nd, but I was wondering if the Sanborn map showed it being at or near the corner of 22nd Street, or if it was closer to Hampton.
This must have been a very lively entertainment district at one time, with the Lincoln, Moton and Dixie Theatres all within a short distance.
Joe Vogel – per the 1919 Sanborn Map, The Dixie Theater was located on the corner of Jefferson and 22nd Street at 2129 Jefferson. Hampton Ave ran between 21st and 22nd Street one block to the south (I think) of the theatre. 22nd not longer runs all the way to Jefferson as it appears on the Sanborn map of 1919. I have posted a jpeg of the map with the theater identified and 21, Hampton and 22nd streets visible.
wsasser: Where was the Dixie in relation to Hampton Avenue on the Sanborn map? Currently the highest number on the block is the Food Tiger Market on the corner of Jefferson and Hampton, and its address is 2115 Jefferson.
Just found several ads that show the address for the Dixie Theater as 2129 Jefferson Ave not 2206. Confirmed such with a Sanborn map for 1919
The correct zip code is 23607. Google’s pin icon and street view are several miles too far north. The actual view of the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue shows that the Dixie Theatre has been demolished.
