The status stating the building is demolished is inaccurate. The building still stands (both the lobby portion and auditorium) and is today occupied by “Eastern Bank”. I did not visit the bank/building but it looks like the interior has been gutted and redone, removing any traces of the theater.
The Melrose Theatre, operated by the Ramsdell Bros., was in a list of theaters and halls receiving state licenses as of Oct. 31, 1914. Also listed was the Melrose Auditorium.
Open ~1930-~1955? Can anyone verify the exact dates?
Owners:
1930-1950 Goldstein Circuit
1955 Affillated Theatres Corp., of Boston, Joseph Hochberg, President. They had 28 theaters in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
More info and photos are always welcome.
There seems to have been a dearth of theaters in Melrose compared with nearby Malden and Medford. The 1927 Film Daily Yearbook lists a “Belrose” Theatre (almost certainly a typo) with 800 seats, open 6 days per week; plus the Melrose City Hall auditorium with 1000 seats, which was also a film venue at that time.
