Located in the Manuka suburb of the capitol city of Australia. The Capitol Theatre was opened in 1927, and became the premier cinema in the city. Seating was provided in orchestra and balcony levels. It was designed to the requirements of theatre impresario J.C. Williamson and presented plays and stage productions as well as films. The first 70mm presentation at the Capitol Theatre was “Those Magnificent Men in Those Flying Machines”.
In 1980 there was a strong campaign to prevent demolition, but this failed, and the building was demolished overnight. The Greater Union Cinemas Capitol Cinemas Manuka complex was built on the site.
