Forest Hill Cinema

Located in the east Melbourne suburb of Forest Hill. The Forest Hill Cinema was built and operated by an independent operator, and opened on 1st June 1968 with Otto Preminger’s “Hurry Sundown”. It was closed in September 1989, when the Hoyts Forest Hill 10 opened in the Chase Shopping Centre across the road.

Last used as a nightclub, in March 2011, it was empty and unused. In 2012, it was in use as a dance studio, but this closed in 2014. By 2017 it was housing an Asian Educational centre, but this had moved out by early-2020.

Although primarily built for cinema, a large stage for theatrical presentation was also included. Sadly, little used. Occasional amateur pantomimes during holiday periods, and some local school speech nights was the sum total of this under-used facility. Recent inspection revealed auditorium little changed, apart from all seating removed and a flat floor to accommodate a dance studio. Original proscenium and silver/grey tabs remain.

Dance school has moved out and “for lease” sign now prominent. Hate to think what will be the fate of this building – especially sad due to the functional stage that could accommodate many shows/functions/conferences etc.

Now housing what appears to be an Asian educational centre. An elevator has also been installed.

Now abandoned and empty once again. With full stage facilities I can’t believe the local council cannot see the value this building could become for little cost into a wonderful community arts centre.
