AndyCallahanMajorMajor, the pictures you posted of the “Gibson Theatre” are not of the actual theater – it is located, out of frame, to the left of your photos. FYI, the theater caught fire Sunday night, March 12. The photo featured on this page is the actual theater.
Thank you Zebulongrady. I will make a note of the company. And Thomasville is not far from here.
Williams Electric Sign Service (WESS) in Thomasville Georgia done a great job of building a replica of the original marquee of the Zebulon Theatre in Cairo. I still had parts of it for them to pattern after and I remembered the color of the neon. The vertical sign was stored in their sign graveyard when I had it taken down.
Thanks for posting. this is the town I live in. the Gibson is still standing and used as a storage area by a local furniture business owner. It was never used as a nail salon, that business is next door. Does anyone know resources for vintage marquees? The marquee for this theater is no longer there.
I have pictures and will try to locate them. I think they are all black and white. C.S.Dunn was my Dad, and this theater was my “Nanny” or babysitter. I was the envy of the local kids.
The Gibson was owned by C. S. Dunn of Dunn Family theatres. It closed in the sixties. The concession stand could be accessed from inside or outside. The heating and cooling system was in a separate building separated from the main theatre by an alleyway. After the theatre closed, it was turned into a furniture storage and the booth was used for storing mattresses. Cannot locate a picture of the Gibson when it was a theatre, but I remember it had a nice marquee.
Here are my pictures of the Gibson Theater from April 2011.
