Located on Highway 160 West, Car Capacity was 160.
US-160 at Spanish Peaks Drive Walsenburg, CO 81089
October 2012 Google Street View shows a For Sale sign, 719-738-1818, the number of Walsenburg’s Acorn Realty.
Absent from 1976 (and earlier) IMPA. Listed in 1982 IMPA. Listed in 1987 IMPA.
A more accurate address for this theater is 22201 US-160, Walsenburg, CO 81089. This points to the drive in itself.
Please update.
There is more than just the projection booth still standing. The frame for the marquee is still there. But more importantly is that the ticket booth is still intact.
It’s clear that the entrance road paralleled Spanish Peaks Drive on the east side of the property. While the exit road was on the west side.
If we are being picky about entrance roads in terms of addresses, then 22240 US-160, Walsenburg, CO would be even more accurate. Although whatever works is fine by me.
The 1961 aerial showed empty ground.
The 1966 topo included the Trail. So it probably opened in the early 1960s.
The 1999 aerial showed a drive-in that still looked active, but then again, it still looks decent today, 20 years later.
Now home to Triple-H Self Storage, which lists its address as 22240 Highway 160, according to the Dec. 6, 2018 Huerfano World Journal. The photo accompanying the story showed the old Trail concession / projection building still there.
The Trail had a soft opening in the first week of July 1963, showing “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” on Friday the 5th, but had a “gala grand opening” on Wed., July 10. The movies that night were “Gypsy” and “It Happened at the World’s Fair.” Admission price for adults was 65 cents, but children 12 and under were free.
Note that the 1963 movie version of “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” starred Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones.
An August 2021 Google Street View of the drive in shows several containers and some RVs along the back of the property next to the projection booth/concession stand.
It seems that the storage business is picking up.
