Indiana University Cinema

Located in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus, the 260-seat IU Cinema serves as an exhibition space for IU film courses, film festivals and series sponsored by various IU departments, campus cine-clubs such as City Lights and Underground Films, and annual screenings of films directed by IU students in film production courses. It is a venue for visits by well known filmmakers and scholars. Additionally, the Cinema offers audiences the best in contemporary arthouse film, as well as repertory motion pictures from local, national, and international archives.

A full range of past and present technologies are utilized for projecting motion pictures. The IU Cinema is one of the best equipped university cinemas in the nation.

I used to see films here back at the end of the 80s when I was doing a fellowship at IU. At that time, it was a dusty forgettable theater that was poorly attended. One of the small theaters downtown would get the more “serious” general releases and I recall a mix of indie and vintage films here, but only a few nights a week. If you missed a showing and were lucky, some films were shown at a brew pub which I believe was a bit further East just outside the campus.
